CCS Conference 2013

European Conference, covering R&D activities in the field of CCS technologies, is planned for May 28th and 29th, 2013, in Antwerp Belgium. The event brings together representatives of academia, research institutions and industrial stakeholders, thus forming a unique knowledge sharing experience for all participants.

The conference is organized by five active 7FP EU research projects, CAPSOL, DemoCLoCk, iCap, Innocuous and IOLICAP, funded by the European Commission through FP7. With the participation of two more FP7-CCS projects, OCTAVIUS and CO2QUEST, and RFCS projects ECLAIR and ACCLAIM, the conference will bring forward a good breath of topics that are critical for the development of sustainable Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage Technologies.

Apart from a general overview of the projects’ objectives given by the coordinators, specific issues of the CCS will be covered through a multitude of presentations pertaining to the work completed up to date within the projects.

Topics that will be covered are:

  • New Solvents for post combustion CO2 capture (Ionic Liquids (ILs), Phase Change solvents, Solvents forming CO2 hydrates, Blends of solvents, ...).
  • Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC for gaseous, liquid and solid fuels, innovative oxygen carriers, Ni-free and inexpensive oxygen carrier materials, Up-scaling of materials and CL-technology and , Effect of impurities (S) in oxy combustion capture, CL reactor design and technology). Dual circulating fluidised bed concepts for chemical looping, Pressurized Packed bed CLC combined with IGGC for gaseous and liquid fuel , Improved gas conversion, ...)
  • Improved post-combustion and Oxy-combustion processes (Combined capture of CO2 and SO2 , Novel spinning disk and rotating beds technologies integrating ILs and SILPs, Innovative process configurations and column internals specifically tailored for the employed solvents.. Reactor design and process layout; solutions for emission control, ...).
  • New Materials and Membranes for post and pre-combustion CO2 capture (Zeolite Imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), Nano-porous Materials with IL layers (SILPs), Supported Ionic Liquid Membranes (SILMs), Polymer and Mixed matrix membranes, Mixed proton-electron conducting ceramic dense H2 membranes, ZIF membranes, Oxygen carriers materials,...).
  • Corrosion/corrosion protection and monitoring (Corrosion properties of new solvents, Corrosion inhibition, Advanced technologies for corrosion monitoring in vessels, ...).
  • Modelling of CO2 interaction of with solvents and materials (Molecular simulation models for defining the molecular mechanisms that govern the structural, thermodynamic and transport properties of solvents, Equations of state (EoS) for modelling solvents phase behaviour in CO2 (SAFT-γ framework, CAMD tools, tPC-PSAFT,...).
  • Integration and Techno-economic studies (Analysis of interactions between power plants and selected post-combustion CO2 capture processes, Novel coal and gas-based power cycles for post-combustion CO2 capture at elevated pressures, ...)
  • Safety, environmental impact assessment and waste management / Public acceptance (Toxicity of new solvents, Rate of solvent release to the environment, Waste production and handling, Impurities in the CO2 stream based on safety, Environmental and economic analysis, Predictive models for the CO 2 concentration as a function of time and distance from release, ...).
  • European markets (Market potential, Eastern European market, Eastern European Platform for Environmental Technologies, Commercial evaluation of Chemical Looping technology, Industrial activities, roadmaps and requirements for CCS,...).
